Kitchen Essentials AND Utensils Part 1
Kitchen appliances often tantalize with promises of timeand energy savings, healthier food or the creation of exotic new concoctions. Many live up to their claims and make your life easier, but others quickly lose their charm and are consigned to the back of the store cupboard.
Kitchen equipment ranges from basic to futuristic, and from simple to state-of-the-art.
When choosing items, consider how much maintenance they will need, the range of functions you require and the level of sophistication you expect; how much money you are prepared to spend and finally, their aesthetic appeal.
KITCHEN ‘MUST HAVES’
FOOD PROCESSOR
The ultimate in kitchen appliances, the food processor chops, slices, grates, beats, kneads dough, purées and squeezes. It peels potatoes, grinds coffee and even makes pasta. The more sophisticated food processors have a vast selection of attachments.
SLOW COOKER
These cook Irish stews for hours and consume the same amount of energy as a light bulb; however, they do not save you time as you still need to brown the meat and vegetables before you put them into the cooker.
TOASTER
Choose from a large variety, ranging from the original bulky box shape to sleek and slim designs. Automatic toasters have a control that determines how dark your toast will be. Most take two slices but some take four, which suits the larger family.
Ensure that the slots are wide enough to take thick slices of homemade bread and that it has a removable tray for crumbs.
KETTLE
Like other small kitchen appliances, the kettle has become an objet d’art in the kitchen. The conventionally shaped metal kettle has made a comeback and this shape is also available in colours and plastic.
COFFEE MAKER
There are many ways of making coffee, and each style has its devotees. A coffee maker produces superb cappuccino, espresso and fresh-ground filter coffee at the touch of a button.
