Kitchen Layouts

The shape of the room will dictate the most appropriate layout. Size is secondary to good planning and organization. The process of getting food from the fridge, preparing it, cooking it and serving it, should follow a logical sequence.

THE GALLEY KITCHEN

This layout suits the smaller, long, thin kitchen. In a narrow area all the appliances will have to be ranged down the length of one wall. If the door and window permits, make use of the width too. A slightly wider room offers two parallel working areas. The galley kitchen needs streamlined, fitted units. Aim to use the wall from floor to ceiling in your design, and store seldom used items on the higher shelves.

Kitchen EssentialAllow 120 cm of space in front of the cupboards so that the doors don’t collide, or use sliding doors. The most efficient work triangle consists of the oven and sink on one side and the refrigerator on the other. Crockery, pans and utensils can be displayed on open shelves where they are readily on hand, but this will only look good if you keep the shelves very tidy.

THE SINGLE WALL KITCHEN

This is the only layout without a work triangle. It is common in loft apartments, and its focus is to incorporate a very effective storage system.

THE U-SHAPED KITCHEN

The work triangle is ideally suited to square rooms. Everything is in easy reach, with sufficient storage, workspace and an eating area situated at the end.

THE L-SHAPED KITCHEN

This design provides a good eating area in the centre and works well in a large, oblong space. You can create a neat L-shape by filling one long wall and one shorter wall with your storage units. The advantage of this arrangement is that it leaves plenty of floor area free. Start from the corner unit and work out from either side. Odd gaps at the end can be filled with work surfaces.

THE ISLAND KITCHEN

Ideal for a large kitchen, this layout offers extra space for work areas and storage. It creates a workable eating area while allowing a sense of openness. Traffic must bedirected away from the cook’s activities. This is an ideal design solution for an integrated kitchen. The island can have storage units incorporated into the design.
