Conquering Clutter

Getting organized is your top priority in the kitchen. Deciding how much youwant to store and where it will be most accessible will help you eliminate kitchen clutter. Space is the most precious commodity, and the use of variable heights and split- levels can provide some ingenious and visually exciting solutions.

Plan your shelves to accommodate the various shapes and sizes of your crockery, cooking utensils and glassware. Functional flexibility is the key to effective storage. The style and appearance of your storage in the kitchen must reflect the character of the room.

Kitchen Essential

ORGANISE THE ESSENTIALS

Build in some work surface between each element in your work triangle and allow sufficient work surface on either side of the oven and next to each appliance. A long work surface is far better than a broken up counter top.

Be selective about what you are going to keep on the surface. Choose only those items that are in constant use, like a block of knives.

Alternatively, mount spices, utensils and attachments on the wall. The rule is to store frequently used items close to the preparation area where you are likely to be using them: keep glasses near the fridge, wooden spoons and other utensils close to the hob, and a wooden plate rack drainer above the sink to hold everyday crockery.

COOKING IDEAS FOR ORGANISED STORAGE

A kitchen needs a very efficient storage plan, so think logically when designing the space. A carousel is the answer to easy accessibility in an awkward corner. To make every inch of cupboard space work for you, have full height cabinets that cut down on dusty surfaces.

Store cutlery trays close to the eating area. Fit cutlery trays and dividers into larger drawers. Awkward gaps can be used for trays and the end of a counter can be finished with open-ended shelves for recipe books.

The inside of cupboard doors can be fitted with racks for cookware and pot lids, spices and all those small pots that tend to make your cupboard jumbled and messy.

Store table linen as close as possible to the eating area. To keep it organized and wrinkle-free, pack it in a series of very narrow drawers or hang items over rods fitted inside a large, slide-out base cabinet.

Store stemmed glasses in hanging racks, and hang mugs and utensils from a row of conveniently placed cup hooks. Tableware, small items, candles and spices can be stored in plastic, wood or cane baskets in cupboards or on shelves.
