Keep Your Kitchen Shine
This is one of the most complicated pieces of machinery in the house. Regular servicing and maintenance are advisable. Most manufacturers recommend the detergent and softener. Daily maintenance is confined to keeping filters clean.
You put silver, cutlery with wood, bone, horn or some plastic handles,. fine antique or cut lead crystal glasses, and gold painted crockery in at your own risk : dishwasher detergents and temperatures are adjusted for ordinary things.
A daily clean with mild abrasive paste, and, if necessary, wire wool, combined with a periodic onslaught with a strong caustic cleanser, is all most gas and electric cookers need.
A gas, self-cleaning oven, and stainless steel hobs have their own instructions. Otherwise cookers go on cooking.
Seldom goes wrong, but you should know who would repair it. Keep the firm’s telephone number handy.
Most, except fridges with automatic defrosting, need emptying, defrosting and wiping clean (use a mild bleach solution to disinfect) occasionally.
Deep freezer
Seldom goes wrong either, but as the value of the food is often so high, get the telephone number of an engineer who would come to see to it. Some big companies organize maintenance contracts and insurance schemes.
Deep freezers need clearing out about twice a year, if only to scoop up the unidentifiable little packets that have dropped to the bottom. Use warm water and a plastic scraper to hasten the defrosting. Wipe down with weak bleach solution and dry thoroughly. Meanwhile keep food wrapped in blankets or eiderdowns or even newspaper. Do not put back until the freezer has reached the correct temperature again.
Elements can be replaced if they go wrong. Kettles often suffer from flex damage, which is easily put right.
Make sure there is a retailer manufacturer to honor obligations under the guarantee. Keep these machines clean, but don’t put plastic parts in very hot water. Be careful not to use them so hard that they burn out.
