A different kind of Christmas—American style

Glimmer, glitter, glamour and gaudy colours — is this an American Christmas? You might think so if you were to visit a shopping mall in the run-up to Christmas, but Christmas is not as commercialised everywhere in America as that which you see in the shopping malls would lead you to believe. Americans do tend to go to town more on decorations, but it doesn’t have to be kitsch or tasteless.

If you’d like to try a different style of table decoration this Christmas, then why not American-style?

Kitchen EssentialWhat to do:

You will certainly have a couple, if not all of the ingredients for this table design already. You need Santa Claus, and a string of coloured lights, edible decorations, lots of brightly coloured baubles and gold tinsel.

The whole spectacular should be founded on a plain tablecloth. On this table the cloth has a metallic shimmer as a “gleaming” background for the gaudy table. Golden stars and confetti sprinkled on the table emphasise this impression and, with the right lighting, create a wonderful glitter effect.

The chain of lights is placed in the middle of the table, surrounded by a golden garland which hides the wire and shimmers with golden glints from the lights. You should arrange the cable so that it passes under the table by your seat, and so that it doesn’t get in the way of your guests.

If you like, you can also arrange brightly coloured baubles in the garland. Don’t be afraid to mix lots of different colours, but the baubles should all be made of the same material. When positioning them take care that the colour of each bauble harmonises with the Christmas-tree light next to it.

In America, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa Claus. He appears on a golden sleigh, loaded with sweets or with little packages for your guests to unwrap.

The napkins should match the colour of the tablecloth. They are shaped into a cornet and held in position with a golden cord. You can also hide a little surprise gift for your guests in the napkins. You can get the cord in haberdashery or soft furnishing shops.

Tip:

Make it into a real occasion by dressing for dinner, even if you don’t usually do so, but do indicate this to your guests on the invitations. The heady atmosphere and finery of your guests‘ attire will be sure to make it a special evening.
