Memories - the good old days

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve led an eventful life or a quiet one — attaining 50 or 60 years of age is a perfect opportunity to remember countless little events. This is most enjoyable at home with your family or good friends of long standing who have been with you through the years.

It can be very interesting if you extract anecdotes and stories which you have never heard before from the older members of your family, using old photographs, letters or other souvenirs. Make the most of the next birthday or celebration to have a chat about the good old days, and use the decorations specifically to create a topic of conversation.

Kitchen EssentialWhat to do:

Use old family china as decoration for the table. If an old service has been ravaged by the depredations of time, as so often happens, then don’t worry about combining it with items from a more modern service which matches it.

If you use coloured table linen rather than a white cloth, you will avoid the rather formal and strict appearance, giving the table more life and lending it greater expression. Here, a deep lilac moire cloth is thrown loosely across the table and complemented by matching tulle in the centre. If you put the family china on such a “rumpled” cloth, you will soon have the first topic of conversation, “We didn’t do that in my day!”

Old family mementoes and little gifts are then scattered under or on top of the tulle. How much of a voyage of discovery this will prove to be for your guests depends on your imagination and how successful you are in hunting through old drawers and cupboards.

Use old photographs as place cards. The guests will find their places when they recognise themselves in the photo, or see something which recalls a particular memory, which they can then talk about.

Tip:

How about giving the birthday boy or girl a bouquet of memories? When you invite the guests, ask them to bring a single flower of their choice (a single rose, a carnation, etc.). There should be a card tied to the flower with a message regarding a specific event or memory which relates to the special occasion. All the flowers, with the attached cards, are then put together in a bouquet on the table, no doubt evoking a host of different memories.
