A birthday celebration fresh from the drawing board
Table decorations can tell a story - either to suit the occasion, or with reference to the guests, the host or the hostess. The example here is for the birthday of an architect, which is celebrated in a fitting setting.
The table here is not meant to be a work desk, but one for relaxation. The materials and equipment which surround the birthday boy or girl at work appear here and act as interesting conversation pieces.
What to do:
Of course, the basis of the table should be plans or blueprints spread across the table. Don’t be afraid to lay plans and drawings at angles across each other. Your guests will have more to discover and the individual plans won’t look like place mats. You can also position a few rolled-up blueprints decoratively on the table.
If you have a model building, this will be great as an exhibit. It shouldn’t be too big though, otherwise it will attract too much attention and detract from your guests, which certainly won’t be what you intended.
Other drawing equipment such as pencils, compasses, scissors, set square and ruler and whatever else you can think of complement the decorations. It is important not to overload the table with decorations. It shouldn’t look like a table which needs a good tidy, but as though it has been designed purposefully.
The napkins can be rolled into pipes and piled together to form a pyramid, so guests can take one at will. A sprig of a plant typically planted around new buildings can be pushed into the pile of napkins.
The place cards are made of cards with cut-outs in the shape of buildings in classic architectural styles or similar designs. You can buy different kinds from good stationers. The guests‘ names are either written on the cards in silver pen, or printed on using a stencil.
Tip:
The birthday celebrant’s profession or hobby can inspire lots of other variations in the table decorations. Toy money and stocks and shares, computer lists and calculators can be used for someone who works in a bank; gardening fans will find old engravings of flowers and plants, while pots of herbs and a toy watering can serve as a vase on the table. Just use your imagination.
