Serving
As long as there is sufficient work surface beside the hob, the oven or the free-standing cooker on which to put plates and serving dishes, there should be few problems.
Within the serving area there should be convenient storage for oven gloves, serving spoons, plates and serving dishes.
Dishwashing
This is often a part of the preparation area. However, if the kitchen is large enough, it may be worth considering a separate dishwashing zone, close to the eating area. This zone will accommodate the waste disposal unit or a rubbish bin and, ideally, a dishwasher. Twin sinks should be large enough to hold a grill pan.
The hob should be linked by a worktop to the sink. It should also have ample work surfaces on both sides of it. Kettle, tea, coffee, cups and saucers are best kept close to the sink. Toasters should be on a work surface or shelf near to the bread. Deep drawers for bread storage are preferable to bins on the work surface.
For regular use, sandwich makers, cling film, foil and plastic bags, plus the bread knife should be conveniently close. The knife can be safely stored in a slot at the back of the work surface.
The kitchen is a good example of the preparation and cooking areas, using a built- under oven and hob bisecting the corner and making a compact yet adequate preparation and cooking areas. The rustic style hood conceals an extractor fan and fits in with the kitchen more decoratively than conventional hoods or large baking trays. Sinks are available with a variety of accessories including a chopping board, vegetable sieve, draining rack and a separate drainer, all of which fit over either sink. A wall cupboard above the dishwasher is useful for storage of crockery. If you do not have a dishwasher, a drainer cupboard above the sink holds dishes, plates and cutlery and is both labour- and space-saving. This is only feasible if the sink is against a wall rather than a window.
Sink units are not designed with storage facilities for washing up liquid, wire wool, brushes and dishcloths, so ingenuity must be applied to find ways of storing these close to the sink. A rack fixed to the inside of the unit door is practical and some manufacturers do offer these as optional extras. Advanced technology has been brought to the development of ovens and washing machines, but not yet to the problem of storing and using washing-up equipment!
Storage of crockery and cutlery
These should be near both dishwashing and eating zones. Table cutlery should be kept in drawers separately from other kitchen gadgets. Cups can be hung from hooks on the undersides of shelves, inside wall units or in a special china cupboard if there is room for one. Fine china can be stored on the high shelves of wall units if they are not required on a daily basis. Glasses and jugs need to be kept near to the water supply and to drinks in the fridge, hence the recommendation that the fridge be situated between the eating and cooking areas. Plastic lidded containers, so useful for leftovers, should also be kept handy. Items which are less frequently used large salad bowls, fish kettles, huge stock pots can be stored in corner cupboards or, again, in high cupboards at the top of appliance housing unit.
The peninsular unit separates the working kitchen from the eating area and houses twin sinks — usable from either side, so the user can face the windows overlooking the front of the house or the French doors to the garden. The dishwasher is fitted beside the sinks and facing into the eating area, so the table can be cleared and the equipment loaded easily.
The work sequence of storage/preparation/ cooking/serving is clearly defined in this kitchen so each function has its own space. Work surface right round links up each of the zones. The four- burner gas hob is fitted diagonally across one corner of the kitchen — a very, safe location offering more working space around it for utensils and ingredients. Above the hob, an extractor fan is camouflaged by a corner hood tiled to match the walls. The double electric oven is built in with work surface on one side and a built-in fridge/freezer on the other.
