Ribbon Star Table Decoration

Guests who phone you up to tell you they’re on their way to visit you can cause hustle and bustle and even panic in your household, as well as delight at the unexpected visit. The table has to be set, the house given a semblance of tidiness and a cake or some pastries have to appear on the double.

If you don’t want just to set the table in such a situation, but would rather put a little more effort into it, it’s a good idea to use decorations whichare within easy reach, but which still demonstrate your personal style.

This table uses things which you will find in your cupboards or which you can quickly grab from the garden or the nearest bush.

Kitchen EssentialWhat to do:

Here decorative strips of fabric or ribbons for gift wrapping in different shades of colour and widths are simply laid across the table to form a star pattern. You will have to decidewhich colours go with your crockery and which suit the time of year.

To hold everything in place use a shallow bowl in the centre of the table placed underneath the ribbons. The ribbons run through the centre of the bowl and are held in place by a few stones. Then fill the bowl with water and place flowers of any kind, in this case sunflowers, in between the stones. With very little effort you will have created an eye-catching centrepiece for your table.

Bottle Parade Table Decoration

If you have to put something together quickly there’s often a problem with regard to which vase goes best with the crockery and tablecloth. Often there isn’t one which is suitable. But before you settle for second best, there is another alternative. You don’t have to use a vase to decorate your table; other containers — such as bowls, jugs or bottles, for example — are often much better suited to a setting which is a little out of the ordinary.

What to do:

A row of empty green bottles makes an effective table decoration. Old wine or champagne bottles covered in a layer of dust are particularly stylish, especially if they have old-fashioned labels. You can buy them from junk shops for a few pounds.

You can be restrained with the flowers here. Just a single flower head, or a few placed at different heights in the bottles, will have such an effect that the whole arrangement will come across as a stylish, carefully thought- out still life.

Tip:

Easily made labels that describe the dishes to be served, or the wine which will accompany them, can give old bottles without labels a special role. If you stick the menu labels on the bottles, this unusual table decoration will have your guests eagerly anticipating the coming meal.
