An invitation to breakfast on a sunny summer morning is simply wonderful. The guest is met by the aroma of freshbread and coffee. That’s the most attractive thing about breakfasting together: you have more time to spend with each other, you have the whole day before you, and breakfast can easily turn into brunch, if liked, or even an afternoon get-together over coffee. The things that you enjoy as the guest of other people can also be enjoyed when you are the hostess, as there is even pleasure to be gained from the preparations involved. A summer breakfast with lots of fresh fruit can be something special and exciting for you and your guests, and the table can be made to look very inviting with very little effort.

What to do:

If you restrict the table linen and crockery to white and shades of green, you already have the basis for a fresh effect. Of course, you can use other colours in combination with white, but the green and white combination sprites to mind first because of the natural green of fruit and leaves.

The focal point of this decoration is, of course, fruit — as lush and beautiful as a bouquet of flowers. Select as many different seasonal fruits as you will need to fill a large fruit bowl. The composition should reflect your imagination and the range of fruits available at the time of year. It doesn’t matter whether you use strawberries, grapes, exotic fruit or dried fruit; they are all suitable for creating this fruit bowl.

Two simple tricks create the special effects. The fruit is dusted with sieved icing sugar while it is still damp from washing. Then a few unsugared vine or strawberry leaves are pushed between the fruit for contrast. If these leaves aren’t available, you can use ivy, but it must be dry and the stems must not come into contact with the fruit. Poisonous substances, which must not build up on the fruit, develop in wet ivy.

A piece of cloth (150 x 150 cm)[5 ft x 5 ft] is arranged loosely in a circle around the fruit bowl. This further emphasises the central fruit arrangement.

You can use the design theme from the centre of the table for the place settings. Place fruit and leaves on the plates and finish off with thin bands of the material used in the central decoration, draping them loosely around the plates.

Tip:

If you have invited several guests for breakfast, you can get them to help with the culinary part of the table decorations. Ask your guests to conjure up their own creations from their choice of fresh fruit and bring them with them instead of flowers.

Kite flying Table Decoration

Perhaps it is one of your most pleasant childhood memories too, of running over the golden yellow stubble fields in autumn and, with dad’s help, flying a home-made kite. What a feeling of joy, happiness and excitement when your colourful kite sailed across the sky!

If you want to celebrate the next child’s birthday in autumn as a kite- flying expedition, or simply want to go on an outing to the harvest fields, then this decorative idea can definitely considerably increase the quality of your time.

What to do:

Try to find a field or meadow where the hay or straw has already been bailed but not brought in. The bales will provide ready-made tables and chairs.

The red and white checked tablecloth emphasises the rustic and happy setting where your meal will be held. A few large tea towels will serve the same purpose.

Several kites — complete with reels and tails, in a range of sizes and colours - provide a background for your little buffet. It doesn’t matter whether they are home-made or bought, they radiate cheerfulness and are a ready- made invitation to grab the reels and start kite flying after you have eaten together.

Smaller toy kites, in this case made of wood, serve as napkin holders. Such models can easily be made from paper or cardboard. If you like, you can use the same models as invitation cards. Stick the small kites onto a card or write on the kite itself. You will be bound to surprise your guests with an unusual invitation to an equally unusual get-together.

The hungry mouths of those present, especially if it’s a child’s birthday, will decide what’s on the menu. Perhaps natural dishes and ingredients can emphasise the fact that it is possible to have such a good time outside in the fresh air.
