Canework and rush
Canework should be vacuum-dusted using a rubber upholstery nozzle. Old and grubby cane can be cleaned using a soft brush and a minimum of warm, slightly soapy water. Do small sections at a time; wipe away any soap traces with a clean damp cloth and pat dry with a colourfast towel. Rush seating should be similarly vacuumed. Avoid using water unless advised otherwise when purchasing.
Most modern bamboo, cane and rushwork is `sealed’ during manufacturing stages with chemical agents. Be extra careful to make a permanent note of the furniture maker’s cleaning instructions.
Marble
Marble can be cleaned by lightly scouring with powdered borax and then washing with plain warm water. When this treatment is not effective a solution of oxalic acid can be applied. Proprietary cleaners are also available.
Glass and mirror surfaces
Glass table tops if very dirty should first be rubbed with damp crumpled newspaper. Then use a damp chamois leather, polishing after with a dry one. You may also use a special window cleaning preparation or general household cleaner, but do watch for overpowering perfumes. Put on with absorbent paper or cloth and polish off with a clean rag.
Mirrored surfaces may be cleaned with the same proprietary cleaners as glass. Alternatively use a soft cloth with methylated spirit.
Steel and chrome
Tubular steel is cleaned with a modern ’sparkle’ polish and chrome with a proprietary chrome cleaner, following the maker’s instructions.
Upholstery
Upholstery should be brushed or vacuumed regularly and shampooed occasionally with a branded cleaner. Take care not to overwet the fabric and aid drying by opening windows or switching on a fan heater. Avoid spraying polish on to chair upholstery by applying to wood parts with a cloth. Grease marks respond to a grease solvent or to a hot iron and blotting paper. Place the paper over the mark and iron gently. (This technique may also be used with carpets.)
Vinyl and plastic materials should be regularly wiped with a damp, soapy cloth. Wipe away any soap traces with a clean damp cloth and buff away moisture drops with a soft rag.
The beauty of real leather seat covers can be preserved by the same treatment. Treat occasionally with light application of ‘hide-food’ — branded preparations are available.
