For a bright festive tea party for children on Bonfire Night, choose colours that reflect the bursts from the firework sparks, gold, pink, green, red, blue, etc. Buy or make shiny hats with streamers on the top and place these at each child’s place. The table-cloth should be dark to represent the sky at night, and use bright paper napkins. In the middle, have the Bonfire Night Cake .

To decorate the table use brightly-coloured streamers and ribbons trailing from the centre, between each child’s place, and hanging over the edge of the table. Place little indoor fireworks around the centre and enjoy these after the food has been eaten, under the strict supervision of an adult. Serve food that can be given special firework names: sausages on sticks are rockets; star-shaped sandwiches or biscuits are star-bursts; slices of Swiss roll become Catherine wheels, etc. Once the children have filled up on all the goodies inside, they’ll be ready to wrap up warmly and watch the fun outside.

The Bonfire Night Cake

Make a Guy Fawkes from a chocolate Swiss roll. Cut one end off for the face, push some small sweets in to create a face and attach the face at right angles to the top of the cake with cocktail sticks. For his arms and legs, push mini Swiss rolls into the sides of the cake. Crumple some red, orange and yellow tissue paper (the flames) and fix to a cake board with glue, leaving a slight hollow in the centre for the Guy. They lay chocolate finger biscuits (the logs) on top of the crumpled paper. Sit the Guy on top of this fire.

Other novelty ideas for the cake are:

• A box of fireworks with some of the fireworks popping out.
• A giant rocket on a stick.
• A large Catherine wheel with sparks flying.
