New Year Dinner Party Table Decoration, Fun and Entertainment
For a dinner party, set a festive scene by choosing a colour scheme that has a special, celebratory feel, for example: black, gold, and purple; red, white and gold; silver and pink. Gift-wrap ribbon is always ideal for creating festive, table-centre decorations as it can be curled into streamers, and trailed over or around table decorations. As it is shiny it reflects candle-light very effectively. Choose real or artificial flowers to fit your chosen theme; arrange candles and ribbons with the flowers to form the decorations for the table. Tie curled strands of ribbon around paper or linen napkins to add to the decorative effect.
If red, white and gold is to be your colour scheme, choose a white table-cloth and red napkins tied with gold and red ribbons. Place gold or red candles in an arrangement of gold-sprayed leaves, red roses or other bright red flowers mixed with white chrysanthemums. Trail gold and red curled ribbons in amongst the arrangement. Lay a flower at each guest’s place — a red rose for the ladies and a white carnation for the men. Little gold bon-bon dishes with sugared almonds and red and gold-wrapped chocolates will help to fill gaps on the table. Place cards can be made from red card and written with thick gold lettering, and a menu can echo the theme with red lettering on gold card.
St Valentine’s Day
A special dinner party for St Valentine’s Day may be a romantic dinner for two or a large gathering for friends. The theme that should run throughout for both table decorations and food is a red heart. If sending out invitations, cut out heart-shaped cards. Plan the food to include as many heart shapes as possible. Here are a few ideas:
Heart-shaped puff pastry cases filled with a creamy mixture of prawns or shrimps, grated lemon rind, lemon mayonnaise, chopped spring onions and cream.
Canapes of wholemeal bread covered with smoked salmon and cut with a heart-shaped cutter.
Sandwiches cut with a heart-shaped cutter, of wholemeal bread filled with cream cheese, chopped cucumber and diced red pepper.
Heart-shaped garnishes cut from red pepper or the skin of firm red tomatoes.
Heart-shaped meringues filled with whipped cream, brandy and crushed pineapple; or filled with cream, raspberries and Kirsch.
A large cake baked in a heart-shaped tin and decorated in white and red, with a large red rose on the top.
Dainty shortbreads or other biscuits cut with a heart-shaped cutter and sprinkled lightly with castor sugar.
The table should be laid with a white cloth — or you may be able to find a commercially-produced cloth printed with little red hearts. Fold lacy napkins into a heart shape and place a small red rose on each napkin. Decorate the table with an elaborate vase of red roses, or press heads of alimonies, roses and carnations into an oasis cut into a heart-shape. Trail curled, red ribbons from the centre of the table, between each place setting, to hang loosely down over the table-cloth. Light the table and the room with red candles to create a soft romantic mood.
