Kitchen Essential

The ultimate hangover cure or early-morning beverage! This is a customized recipe, but as the results will testify — well worth the effort.

• 2 parts vodka
• 1 small can tomato juice
• dash Tobasco sauce
• dash Worcestershire sauce
• freshly ground black, green & white pepper
• half crushed garlic clove
• sliced & diced lemon pieces (with rind)
• 1 celery stick

You may also try fresh tomato for added flavour. Mix 1 fresh tomato with a can of tomato juice in a blender. Mix all the ingredients, except the celery stick in a shaker with cracked ice. Strain into a large glass and add the celery stick. Enjoy!

Margarita

This cocktail always brings to mind palm trees, stretched out beaches and bronzed half-naked bodies. When you’re stuck in a suburban hell, this may be your only salvation.

• 3 parts silver or gold tequila
• 1 part triple sec

• 2 parts fresh limejuice
• coarse salt
• lime wedge

Rub the rim of a large cocktail glass with the lime wedge and dip it into coarse salt. Combine remaining ingredients in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice. Shake wet and strain into chilled, salted cocktail glass.

Fuzzy Navel

Drink a few of these and you’ll soon be having profoundly philosophical discussions about the possible origins of this name.

• 2 parts vodka
• 1 part peach schnapps
• 8 parts fresh orange juice
• orange slice

Combine all ingredients except orange slice with cracked ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well and pour into chilled glass. Garnish with orange slice.

Fruit Punch

This is perfect for big parties with loads of people. It’s really cheap (considering) and works a charm. Note that we give specific quantities here — no parts. Bear that in mind when you double or treble the recipe.

• 5 litres of juice (Tropical works best, but feel free to experiment)
• 2 litres soda water
• 2 bottles of vodka

• 500 ml mixed cocktail fruit pieces

The secret to a deadly fruit punch is to soak the innocent looking fruit pieces in vodka for 4-24 hours. But that’s really it. The rest you just chuck into a big bowl (a sterilized bucket will do the job) and mix, Add ice just before serving if the bucket doesn’t fit into your fridge. Don’t leave ice in the punch to melt, as this will water it down, defeating the object of The Fruit Punch.

Punch is the perfect cocktail to get creative with. You can substitute one bottle of soda with lemonade for a sweeter drink, or with white wine. Basically anything goes as long as it tastes nice. Nobody’s going to mind too much after the second glass.
