Cabinets on two long Walls, the Galley Kitchen

The galley kitchen, generally a narrow room with cabinets on the two long walls, is one of the most difficult types of kitchen to make work satisfactorily.

The most awkward arrangement is when the room is essentially a passageway between the back door and the main living areas. Much less troublesome is the corridor with one completely enclosed end wall, in which the only traffic is that coming into, and not through, the room.

In either case, there should be at least 1.2 m between the facing units, to allow two people to work together comfortably in the room and also, when it is a thoroughfare to the back door, to

Kitchen EssentialEnable the family to walk through without getting too much in the cook’s way. Any narrower than 1.2 m means that bending down to get something from a base unit would become a contortionist’s feat, and it would also be impossible to simultaneously open doors on opposite sides of the room. If you have the space, a walkway of between 1.5 and 1.8 m is ideal. Much more than that and the working spaces are too far apart.

The most usual, and usable, arrangement for the galley kitchen is for the sink and cooker to be on one side with the refrigerator and storage on the opposite wall.

Alternatively, the refrigerator and sink can be on one side, with cooker on the other. If possible, place the refrigerator at the end of the kitchen most accessible to other rooms, so that everyone can use it without disturbing the cook. Work areas and appliances should be grouped together in such a way that you are not continually crossing the room. For instance, the dishwasher should, if possible, be near the sink and crockery storage cupboards.

One great advantage of the galley kitchen is the potential for expanses of workspace. As is the rule with all styles of kitchen, locate tall items such as the refrigerator and broom cupboard at the ends of the walls to allow for uninterrupted sweeps of worktop.
