Home Made Cafe Curtains

A scalloped heading is often used on café curtains. They look particularly good when hung from wooden curtain rings.

1 To work out the amount of fabric required, measure the width of the window and add 3 cm for seam allowance. Measure the length from the rod or track to the desired length of the curtains. Add 5 cm to the lower edge to allow for the hem and add 1.5 cm to the top edge for the scallop heading.Kitchen Essential

2 To make the scallop heading, first decide on the width of the scallops and the band between each scallop. As a general guide, scallops can be 8 cm wide with a 1.5 cm band in between, but you can alter this to suit the width of the window. Use a drinking glass and marking pen to draw the scallops onto a piece of cardboard to form a scallop template. Cut out the template and using a water-soluble pen, trace scallops 1.5 cm down from the top edge of the curtain.

3 Cut a fabric lining piece the width of the curtain and 6 cm longer than the base of the scallops. Stitch a narrow hem along the base of the lining piece. Pin and tack the lining to the top edge of the curtain, right sides of fabric facing. Stitch the two pieces together, following the scallop lines. Trim, neaten and clip seam. Turn curtains to right sides and press.

4 Turn in side and base hems and stitch. Stitch curtain rings to the centre of each band piece. Curtains are now ready to hang on a rod or track.
