Paint Kitchen, Colorful Decoration
- Acrylic paint: You use water to wash your brushes with this type of paint. It’s longer lasting than oil- based gloss paint, as it’s not as brittle and therefore less likely to flake or peel. Water resistant and tough, it’s easy to use and suitable for wall and ceiling areas. Flat finishes are not recommended for hard-working areas in the kitchen; the glossier finishes are a lot more dirt-resistant and easier to clean.
- Oil-based gloss paint: With this type of paint, you use turps (white spirit) to clean your brushes. It’s recommended where a glossy, hardwearing surface is required. Kitchen cupboards, skirting boards and doors are best painted in gloss. Make sure you sand carefully between coats for a long-lasting and smooth finish.
Always use washable paint in the kitchen.
Try some of the fashionable paint techniques like spongeing, rag rolling and stencilling to give your kitchen an individual look. You don’t have to use these techniques over the entire walls — a window frame, archway or door may be enough.
Gloss paints can give new life to existing tiles. Wash the tiles down thoroughly with soap and water, and leave for 24 hours. To remove all traces of grease, wipe down with methylated spirits and then paint. One coat will be sufficient, and there is no need to use undercoat. Gloss paint, however, can show up every irregularity in plasterwork — you may opt for a softer sheen.
Before committing yourself to a particular colour in the kitchen, buy sample pots of paint and brush small patches onto different parts of the wall (the lightest and darkest areas). Live with them for a while before making your final decision.
Paint Kitchen Wall Coverings
Always use a wallpaper paste with a built-in fungicide.
Washable wallpapers are inexpensive and are coated with a thin plastic film. They can be wiped over but are not tough enough to be scrubbed. They are not recommended for heavy duty areas; here, the more durable and more expensive ranges in which the design is actually printed onto a layer of vinyl are more suitable.
Paint Kitchen Timber Paneling
Tongue-and-groove softwood panelling is ideal for covering ugly plumbing or uneven walls. It can be stained or varnished or, for a softer look, painted to match the decor.
In a country-style kitchen, a dado of timber panelling can be installed, with the wall above painted or papered. As there is a gap between the wall and timber panelling, it is a good choice for the kitchen which has condensation problems.
Paint Kitchen Cork Tiles
They retain heat and absorb moisture so are a sensible choice for rooms that are either cold, or suffering from condensation problems.
Use presealed tiles, or give unsealed tiles two coats of polyurethane varnish after installation.
Paint Kitchen Bricks
If you have a wall of exposed brickwork, seal it with a masonry stabiliser to prevent it absorbing grease and stains.
Paint Kitchen Tiles
Tiles are the toughest form of wallcovering. There is a huge range available, from comercially produced tiles to hand-painted ones which you can buy singly and use as a feature. On areas prone to constant splashing, such as behind the sink, use waterproof and stain-resistant grout.
A drawback of tiles is that they are difficult to remove once in place, so choose carefully.
