The kitchen outlook, Beautiful View of Landscaped Garden or Dirty Dishes
Standing at the sink, up to the elbows in dirty dishes, is a lot less painful if you are gazing at a landscaped garden or beautiful view.
No one would pretend that washing up is fun, but, if you really do have to stand up to the elbows in dirty dishes, the whole exercise would be a lot less painful if you were gazing at a beautiful view or landscaped garden. Unfortunately though, while planning can take care of making the interior of your kitchen as attractive and functional as possible, it’s impossible to conjure up a fabulous panorama if you don’t happen to have one at your back door.
However, in almost every case, you can make your kitchen outlook more pleasant; one that will add appeal to the whole room.
If you happen to look onto a brick wall, don’t despair - that’s easy to improve upon. To bring more light into the kitchen, and brighten up that dreary brickwork, consider painting it a colour that will coordinate with your interior decorating scheme. Use weatherproof paint for a long- lasting finish. If you really want to fantasise as you’re slaving over the dishes, and you’re artistically inclined, you could paint a trompe l’oeil mural outside the window. For starters - a fabulous beach scene, complete with crashing waves and sunbathers; or how about an alpine scene with snowcapped peaks; or a panorama across the Tuscan hills to a superb palazzo? There’s no harm in dreaming!
For something a little more down to earth, look for metal pot rings, which you should be able to find in your local nursery. These are installed into the wall, and terracotta pots sit in them. An alternative would be wall-mounted terracotta plant holders. Grow herbs or, for a splash of colour, geraniums or annuals such as pansies. Likewise, a window box installed under the kitchen window can add a lively touch to an otherwise drab scene, or even a practical touch - keeping herbs literally close at hand. If you decide to grow flowers, find varieties that will give year- round colour.
Lattice or trelliswork attached to fences can give privacy as well as improve your outlook. Paint or stain it to suit, and then either leave it as is, or grow a climbing plant over it. Check with your local nursery to find the best plant for the position; choose from a flowering one, such as jasmine or one of the climbing roses, or a non-flowering variety, such as an ornamental grape, creeping fig or a variety of ivy.
If none of the above solutions is suitable for your particular problem view, you can always solve it from the inside. Consider venetian blinds - they can be tilted to get rid of offensive sights without blocking out the light completely, or you could invest in a translucent scenic roller blind.
